BlackBerry Theme Compatibility

March 9th, 2010 by Jennifer

I thought I would write up a quick post about theme compatibility. What sparked my sudden interest in this? I have had theme requests that specify a particular model phone and OS, but the phone the theme will be made for is completely different.

themecompatibility

For example, I have a BlackBerry Curve 8900 on OS 4.6. I upgraded my phone last night to OS 5.0 and of course the 8900 themes do not display properly. So I decided to take some recommendations and download a BlackBerry Bold 9700 theme and it worked like a charm!!

Here are a few I have come across. Please feel free to comment about additional ones I may be missing.

BlackBerry Curve 83XX OS 5.0 – Download 8520/8530 themes either on 4.6 or 5.0

BlackBerry Curve 8900 OS 5.0 – Download Bold 9700 themes

BlackBerry Tour 9630 OS 5.0 – Download Bold 9700 themes

Verizon announced earlier today that they are making all landline and wireless calls from the United States to Chile free in the aftermath of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that shock the country this passed weekend.  Calls made from now through March 6th will be billed at $0.00.  Calls made to Chile going back to February 26th will be credited back to Verizon subscribers bills.

Leading U.S. Wireless Company Reacts Quickly to Chilean Earthquake; Enables Mobile Donations to Habitat for Humanity and World Vision

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ — In the aftermath of today’s 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile, Verizon Wireless has waived all calling fees for its customers trying to reach loved ones in Chile.

Starting immediately and retroactive to the time of the earthquake, Verizon Wireless customers with regular monthly bills can make calls to connect with family and friends in Chile at no cost when they’re on the Verizon Wireless network in the U.S.  Verizon Wireless customers with monthly bills who receive calls from Chile will also receive those calls free of charge.  The company is making calls free for at least one week.  Calls made while roaming are billed at normal rates.

Dan Mead, chief operating officer of Verizon Wireless, said, “At times of crisis, we spring to action. By acting urgently, we are helping families connect without worrying about cost.”

In addition, Verizon Wireless teams are working with international relief organizations to provide mobile giving options for customers who wish to donate to the earthquake relief efforts.  All Verizon Wireless customers who pay a monthly bill, including those formerly with Alltel, may contribute to Chilean earthquake relief efforts via their mobile phones.  To make a $10 donation to Habitat for Humanity, text the word “CHILE” to 25383; to make a $10 donation to World Vision, text the word “CHILE” to 20222.  Customers will receive a text response to confirm the $10 donation, and 100 percent of customers’ donations will go directly to the relief organization’s efforts to help the victims of the Chilean earthquake.  Additional international relief organizations are expected to begin mobile giving campaigns soon.

Verizon Wireless donates the cost of the back-and-forth text messages.  Customers will not be charged for the text messages, and the $10 donation will appear on their regular monthly bills.

BlackBerry Kindle App now available from Amazon

February 18th, 2010 by Jennifer

blackberry-kindle

I just got word that the BlackBerry Kindle application from Amazon is now available for the BlackBerry.  Currently it is only available for the BlackBerry Curve 8520 and 8900, Tour, Bold 9000 and 9700, and the Storm.  What is cool is even though you might not even have a Kindle, you can read books on your BlackBerry. If you happen to have a Kindle (like me), you can access all your books even when you do not have your Kindle with you. In addition, it can automatically synchronize the last page you read between devices.

Some future enhancements that I am really looking forward to are:

  • Scrolling
In addition to page-by-page navigation, you will be able to scroll text line-by-line.
  • Create Notes and Highlights
Along with viewing the notes and highlights you created on other Kindle devices, you will be able to create and edit notes and highlights.
  • Search
You will be able to search within your book.

The new BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express will be available soon, which is a good thing for smaller companies. It is a “lite” version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which larger companies have been using for quite some time. Now, all companies have the opportunity to use BES Express affordably.

Here are some great features:

1. Utilizes Push Technology. Employees can use business applications as well as synchronize emails, calendar, contacts, tasks, memos, and more all on their BlackBerry.

2. Get advanced IT control for employees who choose to bring their own BlackBerry into your business. BES Express is certified for up to 75 BlackBerry users and can run on Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft Small Business Server. If you require additional users, that can be accommodated as well.

3. Controls and and advanced security features, such as encryption and built in protection against malware
